I now have time to catch up on refereeing.
Over the years, my reports have become more decisive, but also more forgiving. If I like the idea, the basic exposition, and so on, I am much more willing than before to sign off. The market will decide the paper’s ultimate impact. Previously, I would be really picky about the final version of the paper. But in the end, it’s the author’s reputation and career on the line.
I don’t think my standards have changed—instead, I am more worried about ‘the big picture,’ and seeing a clear contribution.
