The margin

Sometimes things are too discrete; going from a % grade to a letter grade means discretizing a continuous variable. It needs to be done. Similarly with a tenure decision, or a reject versus a revise and resbumit on a report. For some of those decisions, you get multiple trials to smooth it out: you can submit to another journal, the student will take another course. But you only come up for tenure once. Binary things are tough. Which job should I take? Who should I marry?

  1. I like these examples of continuity versus discreteness… I’ll have to keep them in mind next time I’m teaching quantum mechanics.
